Business Need / Purpose of Role
Under the supervision of the Manufacturing Operations Manager, or Shop Supervisor the Machinist ‘B’ is responsible for supporting shop floor initiatives including but not limited to organizing on a daily basis, communicating key actions required to the Cell Team Leader, and deliverables (includes safety, quality, 5S, and labor productivity) for the Operations group in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities
Including but not limited to:
- Read and interpret blueprints and setup sheets to assure accurate machining and tooling setup. Read and interpret CNC/NC program readouts
- Perform machine and tooling setups at a high level of efficiency and quality. Set up mills, drills, and/or lathes for the next job during present job. Perform de-burring, inspection, cleaning, skidding, etc. during machine cycle time to maximize machine usage
- Inspect in-process and completed parts per operation sheet setups, advising the Cell Team Leader or Shift Leadperson of defects
- Accurately complete all required data, SPC data, time sheets, quantity of parts, etc.
- Advise the Cell Team Leader, Shift Leadperson, or Shop Supervisor of time discrepancies relative to production rates, casting pattern problems, fabrication problems, etc
- Produce product or perform work that will meet Weir’s efficiency and quality standards
- Perform daily maintenance (TPM) and housekeeping (5S) for machine and/or work area
- Advise the Operations Manager, Cell Team Leader, Shift Leadperson, or Shop Supervisor of potential machine, plant, equipment, and safety problems
- Regular and reliable attendance is key to performance of this job
- Promote and maintain a flexible, cooperative, team oriented, and customer focused attitude within and between departments
- Train new employees in equipment operation, including 5S, safety related issues involving crane operation and techniques used to operate lifting equipment
- Attend training, safety, employee, and department meetings, as required
- Complete special projects as assigned
- Comply with all Operations Department and Company policies, procedures, and programs
- Keep the Operations Manager, or Shop Supervisor aware of pertinent issues and information warranting their knowledge, action and/or resolution
- Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations. Maintain departmental housekeeping standards
- Participate on cross-functional teams to ensure the continuous, ongoing improvement of processes, methods, productivity and quality, while reducing costs

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Requires a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, setup sheets, and CNC/NC program readouts. Ability to use and read part measuring equipment. Must have mathematical background. Must be able to comprehend G and M Code programming. Good organization, communication, motivation, human relations, problem solving, and follow-through skills. Work well under pressure and with a diversity of people. Good work ethic - proactive.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND WORK AIDS
Requires the ability to operate a computer for basic e-mail and job log on and off activity. Basic hand tools, part measuring equipment, overhead and jib cranes, lifting chains and slings and all machine shop equipment presently located at our facility.
